Race Report: 2022 IROC Championship Series – Round 1

Round 1 of this exciting new series kicked off Saturday, October 1, 2022 with just five drivers but a competitive bunch for sure. We ran exclusively on the SR3 “straight” road course and with a 4-race format instead of 6. New driver, Eric Lane, joined in for his first “official” race at Stewart Raceway. Eric raced 1/32 cars back in the day and looks to be getting back into slot car racing with a large collection of HO-scale cars.

2 Jerry Pearson 248 39 2577.19

5 Steve Stewart 268 61 2540.275
Race 1: Retro Vipers (12.5v)

We started the day with the challenging Retro Viper platforms and decided to run three lanes so we could allocate a couple of drivers to marshaling, which worked out well for this class.

The Retro Vipers are really better suited for oval track racing but it was surprising how well everyone adapted to the cars. Of course, the seasoned Fray/T-Jet drivers dominated this one. The big story here was that Jerry Pearson bagged the final podium spot in this one, only four laps off the pace of 1st and 2nd, and won his final heat. Impressive driving for a guy who seemed to prefer L4 Vipers. (Details)

5 Eric Lane 46 6 676.079
Race 2: Tyco-Jets (12.5v)

Another “loose” but much easier to drive platform. This race debuted two new cars for the SR3 IROC set. Both without weighted front-ends for the orange and green lanes. While one weighted FE car won two of the five heats, the two unweighted cars won three.  And, both Jerry Pearson and Eric Lane won heats in this one–nice! (Details)

5 Eric Lane 50 6 630.976
Race 3: MegaG+ 1.7 Camaros and Mustangs (15v)

The usual suspects battled it out in this race utilizing Kevin Webster’s nicely prepared set of MegaG+ 1.7 cars. Most of us have driven these cars before and they are very smooth and predictable. Jerry Pearson won the final heat of this fuel race with some nice fuel management tactics. Jerry is well on his way to a 2022 Rookie of the Year award. (Details)

5 Jerry Pearson 66 6 727.872
Race 4: Jag Hobbies TR-3 “Augorans” (15v)

The TR-3 is an amazing car. An inline 6-ohm chassis that fits old-school screw-on bodies, including JL, AW, Aurora, MM and Dash. Still, it’s a blazingly fast magnet car with superb handling and driveability.

2022 NASCAR MADness Series winner, George Peters, dominated this final race of the day by winning all of his heats. Jerry Pearson took the final podium spot with two second-place heat finishes. (Details)

Race Report: 2022 NASCAR Madness Series – Round 5 Finale

We started and finished this series with the same five drivers. While we had various other drivers in the mix throughout the series, these five drivers would be the core competitors and finish the series in nearly the same finishing order as they finished the very first round.

The final round was really a battle between 2021 Junior of the Year driver, Jordan Walker,  and the seasoned veteran, Kevin Webster. Separated by just 25 points going into the final round, it was going to be a dogfight between the two drivers for the second position on the series finale podium.

Going into this final round, George Peters, had a commanding points lead that could not be overcome by any other driver. In fact, George also held a commanding lead in the Concours d’ Elegance competition.

Round 5 Overall Results

2 Steve Stewart ♦ 895 96 10274.54
Race 1: MegaG+ 1.7 Camaros and Mustangs (IROC)

Kevin Webster provided this very fun-to-drive IROC set. These cars were a great way to start the final round and everybody love them. 2021 Rookie of the Year, Brad Sandahl returned to racing with a bang, winning the first segment by a half-second over Home Cook’n. The rest of the race was a bit of a see-saw as Brad and Home Cook’n swapped segment wins while George Peters bagged all the third-place points. Details

4 Jordan Walker 133 7 1564.923
5 Kevin Webster 123 6 1565.44
Race 2: Tyco 440-X2 Widepan NASCAR Hardbodies

Basically a repurposed Tomahawk, these cars are fast and fun, even with bulky NASCAR hard bodies they’re a hoot to drive. Pretty hot & heavy racing in this one. Brad Sandahl won two segments and George Peters again consistently racked up points with three second-place finishes.  Meanwhile, Jordan and Kevin were clearly focusing on their own epic battle for that second step on the podium. Details

4 Jordan Walker 111 7 2355.51
5 Kevin Webster 111 6 2360.914
Race 3: VSR Viper V-SPEC (SPEC RACER) **Feature Race**

Brad Sandahl actually did much better than the results show here, but he had to leave early so dropped out of this one after the first rotation. Brad won one segment on green and remained in second-place until he had to abandon the race.  George took over the second position and held onto it to the finish. Jordan loves Vipers and actually took a couple of second-place finishes and valuable points needed to help stave off veteran Kevin Webster points chase. Details

4 Kevin Webster 223 7 2638.17
5 Brad Sandahl 157 6 2895.88
Race 4: Jag Hobbies PR-5 “Lites” (Box Stock)

Always a wild race, this PR-5 race was wild but pretty uneventful. From the first segment to the last, the leaderboard never changed.  Kevin Webster bagged some much-needed points by besting Jordan Walker by just two laps in the end. Details

4 Jordan Walker 84 7 1356.192
Race 5: Jag Hobbies NC-2 “Lites” (BOX STOCK)

The Jag NC-2 platform is another wild ride but a bit easier to drive due to the shorter wheelbase. Kevin Webster took full advantage of a borrowed Johnny Lightning Pull-Back snap-on body and finished third, two laps ahead of Jordan in this one. These bodies are considerably smaller and lighter than AFX/Tomy bodies and clearly a better setup for this class. Details

4 Jordan Walker 87 7 1403.812
Race 6: Jag Hobbies TR-3 “Lites” Augoran Bodies (IROC)

We don’t race these that often but they’re another Jag Hobbies car that is way fun and easy to drive.  This IROC set isn’t quite Box Stock and has Jag DF rear hubs and independent front-ends. This leaderboard didn’t change much either. Jordan Walker likes the TR-3, finishing second in every segment and just two seconds behind the leader at the finish. Details

Series and Concours d’ Elegance winner, George Peters. Performance and style!

Okay, the 2022 NASCAR MADness Series is in the books. Due to all the controversy, vacations, work, and travel schedules, it was difficult to pull off. But we did it.

Because we often didn’t have marshals at some events, the average lap times and run times are a little wonky. We also skipped using call-buttons and instead relied on the quicker “honor system,” which isn’t always all that “honest.”

Right-click and open a new tab or window to see a larger image.

Congrats to George Peters for a stellar performance in both driving and the art of HO-scale modeling. George won both the racing series and the Concours d’ Elegance competitions!

Thank you to all who competed in this exciting five-race series. Hope everyone enjoyed it!

Race Report: 2022 NASCAR MADness Series, Round 4

Despite a bunch of drivers out of town and one canceling due to illness, we managed to pull off Round 4 on the SR3 oval.

We skipped the Concourse d’Elegance competition in favor of running four races before Jerry Pearson had to bail out. In total, we ran the usual six races, including a couple of fuel races.

Short story, George Peters—again—dominated. However, this time, George dominated the Sportsman and Expert classes overall!

Race 1: Tyco 440-X2 Wide-Pan NASCAR Bodies

These cars are fast and fun to drive. Basically a Tomahawk with a NASCAR-style hardbody instead of Lexan, these things rip. Georgie started out the day winning three of four segments in this first race on points and by one lap to second place. Jerry Pearson drove well as Georgie and Home Cook’n battled and pushed each other to three new oval lap records. In fact, Jerry set a new lap record in the green lane with a 2.393-second lap!  Detailed Results

Race #2: Jag NC-2 Lite NASCAR Bodies (BOX STOCK)
Georgie actually won this race with car #4!

Close racing by all and action-packed. Georgie won two segments and in the end, stole the show by approximately 8-seconds in total run time for the win. Jordan and Jerry also had a barn-burner race going on for the final podium spot with Jordan besting Jerry by just two laps, their run times were almost identical. Details

Race #3: VSR Viper V-SPEC (SPEC RACER) **Feature**

Another amazingly competitive race. While George and Home Cook’n were busy trying to seal the deal, Jordan Walker slyly won the final two heats of this double-rotation feature event.  Jerry got a good feel for what it’s like racing the fastest car we run. But always an uphill battle when the veterans are pushing each other so hard. He hung in there and, hopefully, gained some valuable experience in our premier class. Jordan showed how much he likes the V-SPEC car with brilliant driving in the last two segments of the feature event. Details

Race Report: 2022 NASCAR MADness Series, Round 3

Round 3 was finally concluded on a warm sunny day on the SR3 road course. While attendance was lighter than usual, we were able to run a full program of six races and a Concourse d’Elegance competition, in which George Peter’s Mac Tools Viper V-SPEC NASTruck took top honors.

Short Story is George also dominated the Sportsman racing action by winning five of the six events.

Race 1: OS3 TFX “BOX STOCK” Camaros (IROC)

Starting the day off with some slower but more difficult-to-drive cars was not a hit with this bunch.  With little to no marshal support, the stock TFX race was a drawn-out affair and most drivers could not wait to get to the faster magnet classes. Interestingly, new Sportsman driver, Jerry Pearson did very well with the TFX and ended up in the second spot on the podium in his first-ever TFX race. Detailed Results

Race Report: 2022 NASCAR MADness Series, Round 2

While Round 2 was expected to see a full field of drivers, five were unable to appear for Saturday’s event.

The good news was four drivers rolled through the gates in time to start racing. Well, actually a couple strolled through the gates due to a landscaping crew blocking the entrance to Stewart Raceway.

Anyway, we got a bit of a late start but with only four drivers, the schedule would certainly get compressed. In fact, after the first race, we shut down the two gutter lanes and started racing with just four of the six lanes on SR3.

The short story is George Peters remains the series points leader after two rounds. While the summary results tell a different story, the battle for this round was a lot closer. In fact, several races were lost on the final lap or final corner.  That’s exciting racing!

Round 2 was NASCAR racing on the SR3 road course, which meant slightly shorter segments but still six races, including a feature race of 150-laps with Jag Hobbies NC-2 cars with NASCAR livery.

Race 1: Tyco 440-X2 “Wide-Pan” Stock Cars (15v)
Home Cook’n, George Peters, Kevin Webster

Jerry Pearson started out his racing debut with a solid second-place finish in the first heat and a very close Run Time to the winner of the heat. The number 7 Lumina body was lowered by GP Designs (George) and worked quite well. Detailed Results

4 Jerry Pearson 95 7 1224.1
Race 2: OS3 TFX “Lites” NASCAR Bodies (18v)

This was Jerry’s first crack at a “gravity car” race but he actually did pretty well, staying very close in total laps for many heats and increasing his lap times throughout the race. George–again– was very close and he had the best median lap time.  Detailed Results

4 Jerry Pearson 99 7 1545.817
Race 3: Jag Hobbies TR-3 Augorans (IROC) (15v)

This was another hotly contested race with George and Kevin Webster both winning heats and Jerry besting Kevin by one lap in the final segment. The TR-3’s used are slightly hopped-up with Jag IFE fronts and DF rear wheels. Details

Race 4: Jag Hobbies NC-2 “Lites” NASCAR Livery (15v)

The”Feature”race was another barn-burner with plenty of drama and controversy. We lost Jerry after the lone IROC race but the three remaining drivers soldiered on through the rest of the schedule using only three lanes and Call Buttons to manage the racing.

Home Cook’n clearly had the better car in the feature race thanks to the use of a Johnny Lightning Thunderjet500 “Pull-Back” snap-on body. We use some of their screw-on bodies for the TFX cars. They make two versions: one for T-Jet screw-on bodies; and one for snap-on AFX bodies. There was some discussion after the races about this body not being commercially available but clearly, it is. Race 5: Jag Hobbies PR-5 “Lites” NASCAR Livery (15v)

Yet another hotly contested race with George Peters very narrowly losing this one to Home Cook’n again. Kevin Webster kept up the good fight, only losing a couple of laps per segment, but first and second were both neck and neck on total laps and just two seconds separating them at the finish–that’s close!!  Details

The final race of the day was nearly a repeat of Race 5, with only tenths of a second separating George Peters and Home Cook’n in the final two segments. Kevin Webster remained focused but didn’t have a Lexan body prepared and was forced to run a hardbody, which is obviously a disadvantage in this class.

This was also a “Concourse” race, in which George easily bagged those style points with a nicely prepared Lexan Lumina (middle).  Detailed Results
