What Do I Need To Get Started Racing At Stewart Raceway?

You don’t need anything other than a ride to and from the track. Stewart Raceway provides free loaner cars and controllers for all visitors to the track. We strongly suggest showing up on a track or race day and cutting a bunch of laps with our loaner equipment during a practice session. If you’d like to stay and join in on the racing, fantastic. And yes, you can race competitively with our loaner equipment at Stewart Raceway.

Next Steps

If, after one or more visits, you decide that you’d like to field your own car(s), below is a list of initial items you’d want to acquire:

    1. AFX/Racemasters MegaG+ 1.7 (Long Wheelbase) Rolling Chassis ($25)
    2. AFX/Racemasters MegaG+ Pit Kit – SPARE LONG PICK-UP SHOES ($9)
    3. AFX/Racemasters MegaG+ Tune-Up Kit (Spare Parts) ($9.50)
    4. Mega G/G+ Low Pro Soft Rear tires ($3/pair)
    5. A Controller: Either a 45 Ohm or 55 Ohm DS or Professor Motor unit with alligator clips installed. 90 Ohm controllers work well also.
      1. Professor Motor PMTR2115 HO & 1/32 Electronic Controller ($63)
      2. DS-3503 – Version 3 Basic Controller – 45 to 55 Ohm ($40)

For roughly $120.00, you can get started with your own controller and car. The MegaG+ 1.7 platform is the most popularly raced car at Stewart Raceway, we race two versions of this platform: a “Lite” version, which is pretty much an out-of-the-package car with either a hardbody NASCAR, F1/Indy, or LMP-style body; the second version is what we call the MegaG+ 1.7 “Modified” car, which is the same chassis but instead of a plastic or 3D-printed hardbody, we run in-house made “paper” bodies, which are incredibly lightweight and increase the car’s performance dramatically.

A smart and economical way to go with getting started with the MegaG+ platform is to purchase a Two-Pack Mega G+ HO Slot Car set ($57). AFX makes several two-pack sets, the Formula or Stocker sets are a great choice since we run both styles of factory bodies in the “Lite” class.

Going Further

The next most popular car we run at Stewart Raceway is Viper Scale Racing’s Viper V-SPEC platform. We run three different versions of this car but the most popular is the 6 Ohm, Pro 4 Magnets, with molded Lexan body mounts version. We mostly run LMP/GTP and F1/Indy-style Lexan bodies but any Lexan body will be fairly competitive.

The Viper V-SPEC platform starts at $45 for a basic rolling chassis and up to $70 for a pinned rear axle chassis (recommended), and a painted Lexan body.
